Located toward the south end of Halifax waterfront just a short walk from the Halifax Historical Properties, Pier 21 was Canada's 'front door' from 1928 until 1971 to over a million immigrants, half a million troops and over 100,000 refugees and wartime evacuees.
A National Historic Site, it stands as a testament to Canada's immigrant heritage relaying the emotional experience of those who passed through its doors via interactive displays and virtual projections.
The Resource Centre and Library houses a large photographic archive as well as a wealth of information about individuals who arrived at Pier 21, including names of passengers and ships, actual passports, immigration papers and ships' menus.
One of the highlights of the exhibition is "Oceans of Hope", a stunning 24-minute virtual projection that brings to life the immigrants' 'in transit' experience with breathtaking reality.
Open: Wednesday to Friday 9:30 am to 5:30 pm;
Saturday 10:00 am to 5:00 pm; Sunday 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm.
