Opened in 1965, the Skylon Tower is 160 metres (520 feet) high and rises 236 metres (775 feet) above Niagara Falls. Topped by an impressive dome of light-diffusing grey glass containing a revolving restaurant, an observation deck and shopping area, its three distinct levels allow all visitors to enjoy an unobstructed view of up to 20,000 square kilometres (8000 square miles) of Canada and the United States.
The Observation Deck, at 145 metres (477 feet), comprises an indoor and outdoor Observatory. It is the highest vantage point in Niagara with visibility up to 129 kilometres (80 miles) and stunning views over all three of the river's spectacular falls; the Canadian Horseshoe, American, and Bridal Veil Falls. Just below is the Revolving Dining Room serving award-winning continental cuisine and completing one rotation each hour.
To reach the Dome there are three exterior glass-enclosed 'yellow bug' elevators. Specially designed by the Otis Elevator Company in nearby Hamilton, their name derives from a newspaper article which described them as little bugs crawling up the side of the tower with windows looking like eyes. These particular bugs 'crawl' at 150 metres (500 feet) per minute, taking just 52 seconds to reach the top, and offering an unparalleled vista as the Falls unfold below.
For evening viewing, Niagara Falls are illuminated from around dusk to midnight from May 1st to December 30th (till 11:00 pm in April and until 1:00 am New Years Eve). Firework displays are held every Friday from mid-May to early September at 10:00 pm, as well as Victoria Day, Canada Day and the United States holidays of Memorial Day and Independence Day.
Open: Summer 8:00 am to midnight; Winter 10:00 am to 10:00 pm.
